Sandburg Softball Kicks off Spring Break Trip

BAY MINETTE, Ala.

The Carl Sandburg College softball team played some tight games but went winless on the weekend as it opened the season in the Gulf Coast during its Spring Break trip.

FRIDAY
Game 1
Coastal Alabama-East 10, Sandburg 2 (5 innings)
Key Moment
CA-E struck for six runs in the first inning and added four more in the second. 

Sandburg Star of the Game
Shay Anderson (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) reached base three times out of the leadoff spot, going 2 for 2 with a walk and three steals.

Whitney Wynkoop (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) 1 for 2, walk, RBI

Game 2
Coastal Alabama-East 7, Sandburg 5
Key Moment
CA-E scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead after the Chargers had gone ahead 3-2 in the top of the inning on a run-scoring single from Adre Vetter (Emden, Ill./Hartsburg-Emden). 

Sandburg Star of the Game
Freshman Abigail Stranger (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon) went 3 for 4 with three runs scored for the Chargers, who outhit CA-E 13-9.

Coastal Alabama-South 6, Sandburg 5
Key Moment
Sandburg scored three in the top of the seventh — highlighted by Sam Mayberry’s (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) two-run single with two out — to grab a 5-3 lead, but CA-S hit a three-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the inning.

Mayberry delivered the go-ahead hit in the seventh and finished 2 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Pitcher of Record
L: Kylie Stineman (New Boston, Ill./Mercer County), 6 IP, 0 K, 3 BB

Game 2
Coastal Alabama-South 8, Sandburg 0
Key Moment
CA-S jumped to an early 6-0 lead, scoring three runs in the first and second innings.

Stranger had two of the Chargers’ three hits in the contest, including a double.

SUNDAY
The Chargers’ doubleheader at Coastal Alabama-North was canceled because of inclement weather.

Sandburg continues its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader at 5 p.m. Monday at Gulf Coast State (Fla.).
